LipedemA Coach: Somatic coaching for WOmen with lipedema
"I've done everything right and my body still won't cooperate."
"I feel like I'm grieving a version of myself I never got to be."
"I'm exhausted from explaining this condition to everyone."
"I just also need someone to ask how I'm actually doing. Me, not my body."
"I've made peace with lipedema in public. In private it's a different story."
I see you
You've been trying everything you can to figure it out — the research, the diet, the movement plan, the lymphatic drainage, the compression, the appointments. And still, something is missing.
THe missing piece
Lipedema affects more than the body.
The pain, uncertainty, frustration, stigma and despair can become just as exhausting as the physical symptoms themselves. It often sounds like:
"I'm feeling awful in my body... and I can't tell anymore if I'm exhausted from the condition or exhausted from worrying about and managing the condition."
That’s not you failing to cope. It's the part that rarely gets addressed. And exactly where this work begins.
Imagine feeling:
Like your life is bigger than your diagnosis.
Less consumed by thoughts about your body.
More grounded in yourself than in your symptoms.
More at ease and present in your everyday life.
Less alone in the emotional realities of living with lipedema.
With somatic support, the goal isn't to change your body.
It's to help you feel more supported within it.

ABOUT MELISSA Sandford
For years, as a licensed therapist, I have helped people through anxiety, trauma, loss and life transitions.
I have done this and continue to do this while also trying to understand and navigate what is happening within my own body.
When it comes to lipedema, it is pretty clear that medical specialists and information on physical symptom management are more widely available than ever before. I have enormous gratitude for that, however, when it comes to resources and professionals trained to support the emotional reality of living in a body that looks different, hurts and is so often misunderstood and unpredictable — there are almost none.
That's what brought me to this work. Today, as a licensed therapist and lipedema coach, I combine my professional training and lived experience to help women navigate lipedema with greater calm, confidence, self-compassion, and a nervous system that feels less burdened by chronic stress.

Emotional & Somatic Nervous System Support For Lipedema
-
No — and that distinction matters. I'm a licensed therapist, but somatic coaching is not therapy and does not treat mental health conditions. What it does is help you build a more regulated nervous system, process the emotional weight of living in a body that is asking for special care, and develop a different relationship with yourself and your medical diagnosis. If you're also working with a therapist, this can complement that work beautifully. If you're not, and deeper clinical support feels right, I'll always say so.
The regulations for coaching and therapy are very different.
Coaching: I can offer services to just about anyone, anywhere.
Therapy: In the United States I have to license individually by state. I am currently available to work with clients located in Montana. Visit here for more information - MelissaSandfordTherapy.com

Somatic coaching is a body-based approach to emotional and nervous system regulation. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses primarily on thoughts and narrative, somatic coaching pays attention to what is happening in the body — physical sensations, breath, posture, and patterns of tension or shutdown.
As a Lipedema Coach for women, this is particularly powerful because the condition lives in the body, and so does much of the emotional weight that comes with it.
-
Not necessarily. Many women I work with are in the process of being diagnosed, or have been told for years that their body is simply the result of poor choices. If lipedema — or the experience of living in it — resonates with you, that's enough to start a conversation. You don't need a piece of paper to deserve support.
-
Sessions are 45 minutes over a secure video call, so you can join from anywhere — your couch, your car, anyplace that feels safe. We talk, yes, but we also pay attention to what's happening in your body as we do. I might invite you to notice a sensation, slow down or try a short practice together. Nothing is forced. You set the pace. Over time you build a different connection with yourself and a toolkit of practical, supportive skills that you can use whenever you need.
-
I do have lived experience that brought me to this work, and I'm intentional about how much I share so that our sessions stay focused on you. What I can tell you is that this isn't an abstract specialty for me. I understand the particular exhaustion and frustration of navigating lipedema symptoms — not just from the outside.

Lipedema is a chronic condition affecting mostly women, characterized by a disproportionate, symmetrical buildup of fat — typically in the legs, hips, and sometimes arms — that does not respond typically to diet and exercise. It is often painful, tender to the touch, and frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema for years. It is a structural condition, not a lifestyle one, and it has a significant emotional and psychological impact. Recent research focuses on genetics, loose connective tissue, hormone imbalances, the lymphatic system, and metabolic irregularities.
-
For many women, a lipedema diagnosis brings a complicated mix of relief and grief. Relief because there is finally a name for something they have struggled with for years. Grief because the diagnosis often arrives too late — after decades of being told it was their fault, after diets that didn't work, after feeling invisible in medical settings. Processing that grief is a legitimate and necessary part of living well with lipedema.
-
Coping with lipedema emotionally often requires support that goes beyond what medical appointments can offer. Helpful approaches include connecting with others who truly understand the condition, working with a therapist or coach who specializes in chronic illness, nervous system regulation practices, and learning to separate your worth from your body's behavior. You don't have to manage this alone, and managing it in silence is not the only option.
-
This is one of the most painful and misunderstood aspects of lipedema. Lipedema fat is different and does not respond to diet or exercise the way typical fat does — this is a physiological fact, not a failure of willpower. You can support your overall health through movement and nutrition, however, it is not uncommon for the lipedema-affected areas to respond differently. This is why it is so important that your care — including your emotional care — is built on that truth, not on the assumption that you simply haven't tried hard enough.
-
Item dLipedema can significantly affect mobility, daily functioning, and quality of life, and in more advanced stages it may qualify as a disability depending on your country and circumstances. Beyond the legal definition, it is important to recognize that lipedema is a legitimate chronic condition that deserves accommodations, compassion, and comprehensive support — including emotional and psychological care.
